The Tarot has three magicians: the Juggler, the Pope, and the Hermit (arcana I, V, & IX). Not only are these three different types of magician, they are the three Magi of the Nativity, who followed the star from the east to bring gifts of gold and incense to the child Christ—perhaps the greatest magician of all. The types of magic they represent are arbitrary magic, witchcraft, folk magic, spellwork, divination, etc. (the Juggler); initiated social magic, religion, fraternal orders, secret societies, priesthood, etc. (the Pope); and finally hermeticism, occult science, contemplation of nature, monkhood, etc. (the Hermit). These are not mutually exclusive, and it is arguable that the greatest magicians, like Jesus and “thrice great” Hermes Trismegistus, excelled in all of these. What’s your favorite form of magic? Are you the Juggler, the Pope, or the Hermit?
