Ana Mendieta, Untitled (Glass on Body Imprints), 1972

this and so many other works of mendieta are getting flagged..

🙄women’s bodies are inherently pornographic and offensive, mendieta working nearly fifty years ago faced exactly the same moral condemnation and stigma, while making works about the objectification of the female body and its existence beyond dehumanizing narratives: mendieta showed the female body as powerful, dynamic, magical, as well as misunderstood, hated, and violently exploited. have ppl learned nothing? full circle indeed

let us not forget that ana mendieta was also murdered by her boyfriend as the result of domestic violence. and he got away with it

***her husband, carl andre, who pushed her out a window to her death, claimed innocence, was bailed out by artist friend frank stella, and still walks freely. andre exploited his greater fame. he was tried before no jury and was acquitted of charges; upon the requests of his lawyer, court records were sealed, and the affair was covered up. galleries and museums around the world continue to show his work, and sometimes it sits across from the work of the woman he murdered.
