Artavazd Peleshian developed a style of filmmaking called distance montage. Contrary to the influential Eisensteinian model, Peleshian derives meaning from the experience of the whole film not a dialogue between the frames. Where Eisenstein’s montage attracts the mind, Peleshian’s montage awakens the spirit.
End is such an example of this distance montage. A simple train ride takes on metaphorical meaning. It is the journey of life. It is the ascent into Heaven. It is man’s ability to do good.
