From our Book Arts collection, A Portfolio of Piles, by N.E. Thing Co. (N7433.4 .B398 P678 1968 Cage).

“Piles are not pretentious–they are just there being beautiful and doing their thing. Why piles? The structure is usually determined either by the object alone or the object plus the piler’s imagination or lack of it. Naive piles usually are the greatest. It’s the molecular structure and physical characteristics that give pile materials their nuances of stackability.

The N.E. Thing Co. is interested in ACT or Aesthetically Claimed Things–a visual Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval. The Company has been ACTing for a number of years now and a publication will be coming soon regarding ACT.”

- Iain Baxter, Co-President.

Iain Baxter, who now goes by Iain Baxter& (and also has two ampersands tattooed on his hands) is known as ‘the Marshall McLuhan of the visual arts.“

Baxter& was co-president with Ingrid Baxter of the conceptual project and legally incorporated business N.E. Thing Co., founded in 1966. Recognized internationally as an early practitioner of conceptual art, N.E. Thing Co. created some of the earliest photo-conceptual works to display a tendency to use photography to document “idea-works and their sites, as language games and thematic inventories and as reflective investigations of the social and architectural landscape.”
